  16. A "Style Sheet" is a set of publisher instructions, usually stored as a
  17. separate disk file, which establish the page layout and format for
  18. publishing a document. Preparing or selecting a suitable style sheet is
  19. normally the first step in publishing a document. 
  20.  
  21. The Publisher has a default style sheet, which is stored in the file
  22. SETUP.TAG.  If this is chosen, no action is needed to insert or
  23. "include" this style sheet in the document file: it will be adopted
  24. automatically by the Publisher, in the absence of instructions to the
  25. contrary. 
  26.  
  27. Users may create their own style sheets, using a suitable text editor to
  28. create a new instruction file and insert the necessary set of tags,
  29. bearing in mind that if the selection of some particular option or value
  30. is left unspecified, the Publisher will adopt the option or value
  31. specified in the default file SETUP.TAG. 
  32.  
  33. 8.2 ELEMENTS OF A STYLE SHEET
  34.  
  35. All page layout measurements used by the Publisher are measured from the
  36. TOP LEFT CORNER of the page, which is called the "origin" of the page. 
  37.  
  38. The options and measurements normally specified in a complete style 
  39. sheet are as follows.
  40.  
  41. 1. Margins and Page Interior
  42.  
  43.     EXAMPLE: the tag: 
  44.  
  45.     <margin top=1.0in left=0.75in bottom=10.0in right=7.75in><qz>
  46.  
  47.     defines a page interior 7 inches wide and 9 inches long, with a top
  48.     margin of one inch, and a left margin of three-quarters of an inch.
  49.     If letter-size paper is being used, the right and bottom margins
  50.     will be three-quarters of an inch and one inch, respectively. 
  51.  
  52. 2. Font and Column Measure
  53.  
  54.     EXAMPLE:  If the page interior is 7 inches wide, the tags line:
  55.  
  56.     <Trajan10m><column measure= 3.375in gutter=0.25in><qz> 
  57.  
  58.     or, alternatively,
  59.  
  60.     <Trajan10m><column count=2 gutter=0.25in><qz>
  61.  
  62.     will spcify a page printed in Trajan 10 point medium (regular) type,
  63.     in two columns 3.375 inches wide, separated by quarter-inch gutter.
  64.  
  65. At run time, the Publisher will automatically lay out columns and 
  66. gutters as specified on a page, and will start a new page whenever 
  67. necessary. Of course, if the column structure is specified by means 
  68. of the column measure (width), the specified column measure must not 
  69. exceed the width of the page interior.

  71. 3. Leading (Line and Paragraph Spacing)
  72.  
  73.     EXAMPLE: the tag
  74.  
  75.     <leading line=12pt para=3pt><qz>
  76.  
  77.     specifies an line leading of 12 points (suitable for 10-point type)
  78.     and a paragraph leading (extra vertical space between paragraphs) of
  79.     3 points.

  81.  
  82. 4. Header and Footer Drop (Location)
  83.  
  84.     EXAMPLE: the tag line
  85.  
  86.     <margin header=0.75in footer=10.5in><qz>
  87.  
  88.     will cause the top of the running header (if one is defined) to be
  89.     located 0.75 inches below the top of the page, and will cause the
  90.     top of the running footer (if one is defined) to be located 10.5
  91.     inches below the top of the page. 
  92.  
  93. 5. Folio (Page Numbering)
  94.  
  95.     EXAMPLE: the instructions
  96.  
  97.     <footer>
  98.     <PN><QC>
  99.     <end>
  100.  
  101.     will cause the folio (page number) to be printed at the bottom
  102.     center of each page, at the position designated as the footer drop.
  103.     
  104. Page numbering starts at 1 unless the user initializes it to some other
  105. value "n" by means of the tag <PN=n>, and appears in conventional Arabic
  106. numerals unless the user selects Roman numerals by means of the tag
  107. <folio roman=1 case=n> where "n" is `0' for lower case and `1' for upper
  108. case. 
  109.  
  110. The <PN> tag must be placed inside a header or footer: the <PN=n> tag
  111. would normally be placed in the initialization sequence, and in any
  112. event must be located outside the header and footer definitions. 
  113.  
  114. 6. Paragraph Style
  115.  
  116.     EXAMPLES: the tag <IP1.27cm> or <IP.5in> will cause the text to be
  117.     published in standard paragraphs, with the first line of each
  118.     paragraph indented one-half inch on the left, and no other
  119.     indentations. Similarly, the tag <IH1.27cm> or <IH.5in> will cause
  120.     the text to be published in hanging paragraphs, with the first line
  121.     of each paragraph starting at the left margin of the column, and all
  122.     other lines indented one-half inch on the left.

  124. 8.3  USING A STYLE SHEET
  125.  
  126. There are two methods of using a style sheet:
  127.  
  128. 1. The contents of the style sheet may be copied into the document file
  129. at the beginning, before any printable text; or 
  130.  
  131. 2. The contents of the style sheet may be stored in a separate disk
  132. file, which may be "included" at the beginning of the document file,
  133. before any printable text. EXAMPLE: if the style sheet is stored in a
  134. file named STYLE.ONE, it may by utilized by placing the tag
  135. <include style.one> at the beginning of the document file. 
  136.  
  137. Method (2) is generally preferable, since it results in a shorter 
  138. and simpler document file, and permits the same style sheet to be 
  139. used for many documents without cluttering up the computer disk with 
  140. multiple copies of it.
  141.
